Manningham Council and Cofely Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as the first step in preparing a detailed district energy project proposal for Doncaster Hill.

The signing of the MoU took place on Monday 14 July, 2014.  The MoU was signed by:

  • Manningham Council Chief Executive Joe Carbone
  • Eric de Seguins Pazzis, Vice President Business Development, GDF SUEZ Energie Services International Division
  • Vaughan Furniss, Managing Director, Cofely Australia Pty Limited.

Background

District energy is widely recognised as a sustainable, cost-effective solution to the provision of heating, cooling (via an insulated pipe network) and power.

Cofely Australia (a subsidiary of the multinational utility company GDF SUEZ) was announced as the preferred provider for District Energy Services for the Doncaster Hill Activities Area in August 2013.

The MoU signing follows more than two years of work by Manningham Council and electricity distributor United Energy, investigating the possibility of bringing 21st century energy services to Doncaster Hill. Cofely Australia has also supported Manningham City Council and United Energy in its investigations during this period.

Manningham Chief Executive Joe Carbone said the demand for electricity in Australia is projected to grow by nearly 50 per cent between now and 2030 and local area solutions are an appropriate way of meeting rising demand in areas such as Doncaster Hill.

”Cofely Australia’s district energy system could result in a 27 million dollar infrastructure investment, with major advantages for customers and the environment.”

“Not only will the proposed District Energy Service supply cleaner and greener energy to customers on the Hill, but it could also result in lower heating and cooling costs for customers,” he said.

Cofely Australia’s Managing Director Vaughan Furniss said “We are pleased to be associated with Australia’s first real precinct energy solution. The Doncaster Hill scheme is a strategically important project, providing a roadmap which other local authorities can follow to deliver energy efficiency and demand measures, alongside lower cost energy with environmental benefits”.

GDF SUEZ Energie Services VP Eric de Seguins Pazzis said “Energy and environmental efficiency is a key strength and strategy for development of our group. We are pleased to contribute our key capabilities and innovation in decentralised energy to providing sustainable and future-proofed outcomes to our customers”.
